The album was commissioned by John Hammond as a suite of music to portray the African American experience in the United States. Ellington and his orchestra rose to the challenge and created a masterpiece that is still considered one of the most important jazz albums of all time. Black, Brown and Beige features thrilling performances by Ellington and his orchestra, as well as guest appearances by some of the biggest names in jazz, including Louis Armstrong and Dizzy Gillespie.
