Black Celebration is the fifth studio album by English electronic music group Depeche Mode , released on 17 March 1986 by Mute Records. The album was supported by the Black Celebration Tour. Black Celebration continued to explore dark electronica, featuring dense production and elements of industrial music. Singer Dave Gahan's lyrics dealt with more personal themes such as love and addiction. The album was commercially successful, charting at number six on the UK Albums Chart and number eight on the Billboard 200. The Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) awarded it a platinum record for shipping one million copies in the United States. Black Celebration was retroactively praised by music critics. In 2013, Rolling Stone magazine ranked it as the sixth best Depeche Mode album .
