101 is the seventh studio album by English electronic music group Depeche Mode , released on 14 October 1989 by Mute Records. It was the first album recorded by the band with the new line-up of Dave Gahan, Martin Gore and Andy Fletcher. On the album, the band departed from the synthpop style of their previous albums and moved towards a more guitar-based sound. The album was commercially successful and charted at number two on the UK Albums Chart and number six on the Billboard 200. The album spawned two singles, "Personal Jesus" and "Enjoy the Silence". The album was certified platinum by the British Phonographic Industry Association and gold by the Recording Industry Association of America. In a review for Rolling Stone magazine, David Fricke said, "With 101, Depeche Mode have released their most accomplished and assured album to date." Robert Christgau, in his Consumer Guide, gave the album an A, saying: "The guitars and drums add a new dimension to the album, and Gore's songs - the best he's ever written - are both baroque and catchy."
