Random Access Memories is the fourth studio album by French electronic music duo Daft Punk , released on 17 May 2013 by Columbia Records. The album pays tribute to the American music industry of the late 1970s and early 1980s, when artists such as Michael Jackson, Donna Summer and Chic were at the height of their fame. It features collaborations with Giorgio Moroder, Panda Bear, Julian Casablancas, Pharrell Williams, Paul Williams, Todd Edwards, DJ Falcon and Chilly Gonzales. The album was recorded in Paris between January and March 2013, with additional recording and mixing taking place at The Village Recorder in Los Angeles. The album was produced by Daft Punk , Nile Rodgers and Paul Williams, with additional production by Chilly Gonzales. Daft Punk approached Rodgers after seeing him perform with Chic at the 2012 Grammy Awards, and the two agreed to collaborate. The album title was announced on February 26, 2013 on Daft Punk's official website . Random Access Memories was well received by music critics, who praised its throwback sound. Several publications, including Rolling Stone, NME and Pitchfork, named it the best album of 2013. The album became Daft Punk 's first album
