The album's lead single "Speed of Sound" became the band's first number one single in the UK and was also successful in the United States. The second single from the album, "Fix You", was also successful and reached the top five in the UK and US. The album's third and final single, "Talk", reached the top twenty in the UK. The album title "X&Y" is a reference to the mathematical concepts of "x" and "y". The album's lyrics were written by singer Chris Martin about his personal life and relationship with actress Gwyneth Paltrow. Martin said the album is about "finding love and finding meaning in life". The album's music has been described as alternative rock, Britpop and pop rock. The sound of the album has been compared to that of Radiohead. The album was produced by Coldplay , Rik Simpson and Ken Nelson.
