Buddy Guy's "Blues Singer" album is dedicated to John Lee Hooker. Although Buddy Guy is not known for his acoustic qualities, in this unplugged excursion into folk blues, he has taken a chance with an acoustic instrument. The guitarist goes back to basics and presents twelve tracks that sound as familiar as if he recorded them on his own patio or in his living room. His concise guitar melodies are as ever-present as his emotive voice. In an acoustic setting, however, both of these songs take on a whole new quality. Accompanied by minimalist bass and jazzy drums, Guy sounds almost possessed as he interprets cover versions of Skip James ("Hard Time Killing Floor"), Johnny Shines ("Moanin' and Groanin'"), Son House ("Louise McGhee") and John Lee Hooker ("Sally Mae"). "Blues Singer" as a whole is minimalist and unobtrusive, made for late nights and rainy days. Buddy Guy is at least as convincing here as he is on his electric albums, making "Blues Singer" one of his most insightful works. It's not for nothing that the album was awarded a Grammy for Best Traditional Blues Album in 2004.
