Lyrics that sounded like Christian sermons: with the album "Slow Train Coming", released on August 20, 1979, Bob Dylan shocked many fans. But the turn to faith didn't come as suddenly as it seemed. They had been rehearsing new songs since late 1978. From April 79, recording took place at Muscle Shoals in Alabama. In the liner notes to Dylan's box set "Trouble No More", American author Amanda Petrusich places the events of the time in the overall situation of American society. The 1960s generation felt wounded and lost. People sought refuge and healing - including in evangelical Christianity. Bob Dylan, too, was in crisis at the age of 37 after a failed marriage. But his conversion was not entirely sudden: already the '78 album "Street Legal" offers songs that allow for secular and religious readings. Then it's clear: in November 78, a fan throws him a silver cross on stage. The singer takes it. In a hotel room in Arizona, an epiphany occurs that Dylan experiences as the physically tangible presence of God. He speaks publicly about his conversion to Jesus and is baptized.
