The album was released on CD, cassette and vinyl. The title of the album comes from the Sanskrit word "yoga", meaning "connection with the divine". Björk has stated that the album is about "a journey from head to heart". Musically, the album is a departure from Björk's previous work and contains more electronic and ambient sounds. The album was met with mixed reviews from critics. Some praised Björk's experimentation , others criticized the album's lack of focus. However, the album was a commercial success, reaching number one in Iceland and number twenty-eight in the United Kingdom. The album's lead single, "Hunter", was released in September 1997.
