The original Biophilia album was released in 2011 to a positive critical reception. The New York Times had this to say about it, "The new songs juxtapose the soaring textures of choir and organ with sparse pointillism and sudden bursts of breakbeat percussion, all against a backdrop of Björk's idiosyncratic melodies: pithy or drawn-out, stopping unexpectedly and then serpentine, rising and opening into banshee wailing."
