The four seasons as you've never heard them before, reduced to their pure essence as an example of violin art. These two Baroque masterpieces have proved highly adaptable to a wide range of arrangements for instruments from string quartet to wind ensemble. Mauro Tortorelli, however, came up with a truly novel concept of arranging them for solo violin. Not only are the elaborate solo parts played, but also as much accompaniment - in Vivaldi's case a string orchestra, in the "Devil's Trill" a basso continuo - as can fit on the four strings of the violin. Tortorelli's arrangement makes scholarly sense because it focuses on the "violin art" that inspired many compositions for the instrument in 18th-century Italy. It is what inspired much of the music of the 18th century. Its lively and imaginatively recorded performance, however, creates a lively musical theatre in itself. The effect could be likened to that of a professional street musician playing with familiar lyrics and giving them an improvisational imagination. Mauro Tortorelli, who has long been considered one of Italy's finest teachers and performers, is currently professor of violin at the Gesualdo Conservatory in Potenza and also works as a chamber musician. On the Brilliant Classics label he has compiled a critically acclaimed discography including albums by Saint-Saëns (94848), Milhaud (95449), Shevchik (96213), Scalero (96160) and Castelnuovo-Tedesco (96007). Violinist and arranger Mauro Tortorelli on this unique project: 'This recording is a challenge not only in terms of performance (playing the solo and orchestral parts at the same time) but also in terms of arrangement. It was not at all easy to simulate all the colours of the orchestra, the different voices in counterpoint and the tonal contrasts on just four strings of the violin. Paganini's ingenious technique of double trills and left-hand pizzicatos (in the second movement of L'Inverno and the second movement of L'Estate), Bartók's pizzicato (for the rifle shots in the last movement of L'Autunno) and Henryk Szeryng's impressive bowing technique, Henryk Szeryng, which was passed on to me by his pupil Georg Monch, certainly suggested the best instrumental solutions to achieve the clearest possible performance of each movement of a complex work, which enabled me to overcome the obstacles presented by the original score. The decision to transcribe these two famous works for solo violin was also prompted by their great melodic power. Each time I studied the two pieces in order to perform them publicly in their original instrumentation, I felt that they no longer worked without accompaniment. Since I am not a 'baroque violinist', I preferred to perform the pieces with contemporary technique and interpretation, respecting as much as possible the score of Antonio Vivaldi's Four Seasons as revised by Gian Francesco Malipiero and the manuscript score of Giuseppe Tartini's Devil's Trill, adding my own cadenza."
