Italian cellist Giordano Antonelli and his baroque ensemble Musica Antiqua Latina have recorded popular concertos - including the famous Mandolin Concerto RV 425 - as well as lesser-known concertos and symphonies by Antonio Vivaldi. The ensemble takes a different approach to Vivaldi's works, emphasizing the influences of various European and Middle Eastern cultures on Vivaldi's music. The Sinfonia RV 125, for example, which has remained almost unpublished, shows the influence of Slavic musical traditions in its syncopated accents. The Cello Concerto RV 413 and the Concerto for Flute, Violin and Bassoon RV 96 show features of the German musical tradition. Concerto RV 517 for two violins reflects a distinctly northern European, but also Spanish style. The Sinfonia RV 168 is also evidence of Vivaldi's continuous collaboration with musicians from northern Europe. The third movement of this symphony, however, shows clear Balkan influences; Giordano Antonelli performed it with a long improvisation on the Greek lyre in the style of Ottoman taksim. Venice, where Vivaldi spent almost all his life, has always been a metropolis where communities of different nations met and shared their musical traditions. It is against this cultural background that this album takes place: Giordano Antonelli and his ensemble Musica Antiqua Latina let us hear the sound of cosmopolitan Venice in Vivaldi's works.
