Marc Coppey brings to the interpretation of three classic works of cello literature the experience of nearly twenty years of solo recitals, chamber music and concerts with renowned orchestras. Having recorded Haydn and C. P.E. Bach, audite presents here its second CD with the French cellist. Home on the Road: in Shelomo, Bloch explores his cultural and religious roots; Dvořák illustrates old and new homes in his Cello Concerto; and the forest scene, Calm, is both a bridge and an atmospheric reminiscence. Common to all three works is the composers' view from Europe to America and vice versa: Bloch's Shelomo was composed immediately before his trip to America; Dvořák composed his Cello Concerto in B minor after his arrival. In the meantime, the composition Calm was performed: before leaving for America, Dvořák arranged his original four-hand piano piece for cello and piano for the farewell tour. It became so popular that he later arranged it for cello and orchestra in America. Antonín Dvořák and Ernest Bloch set clear boundaries for the performers of their works, but at the same time demanded a great deal of freedom from them. Coppey achieves both in a convincing balance and intense communication with the orchestra. He has no need to demonstrate his virtuosity with excessively fast tempi, but even in this respect he sticks to the score's recommendations. This contributes greatly to the clarity, liveliness and eloquence of his interpretation. The Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin and Kirill Karabits are suitable partners for him.
