Bedřich Smetana

Bedřich Smetana

Czech Romantic-era Composer and Pianist

Bedřich Smetana was a Czech composer who is widely regarded as the father of Czech music. He was born on March 2, 1824, in Litomyšl, Bohemia, which was then part of the Austrian Empire and is now in the Czech Republic. Smetana was a pioneer in the development of a musical style that became closely identified with his country's aspirations to independent nationhood. He is best known for his opera "The Bartered Bride" and for the symphonic cycle "Má Vlast" ("My Homeland"), which portrays the history, legends, and landscape of his native land.
