The Fourth Symphony occupies a special place in Anton Bruckner's symphonic cycle. It heralds the cycle of his "mature" symphonies. The composer addressed it directly to his listeners and wanted them to understand him. He succeeded - today the "Romantic" is one of Bruckner's most popular symphonies. Yet he revised it again and again, so that there are three versions of the Fourth Book. Jakub Hruša has recorded all versions of the Fourth Symphony with the Bamberger Symphoniker, who boast a long history of interpreting Bruckner. This is a unique opportunity for a conductor to record all versions of a symphony. Moreover, as Hruša himself says, the project allows those interested to make their own judgement on the quality and editing of the individual versions. The listener can thus decide for himself whether the composer was right in his doubts and whether it makes sense to "play" one version against the other. This CD box also contains a fourth CD with an alternative finale ("Volksfest") to the second version and other excerpts from the early versions.
