One of the most famous recordings of Tchaikovsky's popular ballet The Nutcracker was not made in Russia, but in London in 1972. Andre Previn was at the podium of the London Symphony Orchestra, turning the musical treatment of the seemingly innocuous Christmas tale into a fantastic drama. Immediately after the album's release, critics praised the spacious and colourful orchestral sound, the great arc of tension and the narrative power of the music. Now the album is being released on vinyl. The complete ballet music goes far beyond the Nutcracker Suite, which has become one of the hits of the classical repertoire. The long version emerges as a dramatic large-scale work in which Tchaikovsky combines all his qualities as a symphonist, but also as a sonic visionary and musical storyteller. The Nutcracker is based on a Christmas tale by the Romantic composer E. T. A. Hoffmann, who turned the story of toys coming to life under the Christmas tree into a work of black Romanticism. Tchaikovsky's ballet was first performed in 1892 and is considered the culmination of the ballet tradition of the famous choreographer Marius Petipa.
