Since 2004's "Leviathan", which is now rightly considered a classic, Mastodon have been one of the most influential hard'n'heavy bands of our time. Why? Because they combine the best of the seventies (Thin Lizzy!) with a modern sound: Noise, alternative, thrash metal, hardcore - everything was their inspiration. This of course also applies to "Blood Mountain", originally released in 2006, where Mastodon seems a bit more progressive this time. Or else: it's hard not to notice that one of their favorite bands/patterns is King Crimson. Robert Fripp and his people shine throughout, especially in the arrangements - though Mastodon are obviously much heavier. But the best part is that despite the many breaks and the huge difficulty, they don't forget the groove: most of the songs go in the ear and in the stomach. This is evidenced by the fast opener "The Wolf Is Loose", which has a wonderfully rich middle section. The dreamy, dramatic "Crystal Skull" is different. Here, the tried and tested Mastodon recipe reigns supreme, properly enhanced with a 70s sprinkle and with a surprise or two in store. They then deliver a set that is full of rhythmic breaks. At first glance, little seems coherent, but the approach to the songs is easier than on Leviathan. The excellent production and the peculiar, or rather independent, sound make sure that the listener stays in suspense.
