Sony Masterworks

Originally formed as a label in the 1990s by Sony after its taking over of the CBS Records group, echoing the former labels CBS Masterworks, and Columbia Masterworks. Two further Masterworks series were formed under Sony Classical, Masterworks Heritage in 1997 (defunct by 2008), and Masterworks Expanded Edition in 2003 (defunct by 2007). Between 2004 and 2008 - the Sony BMG era - the Sony Masterworks was inactive and replaced with Sony BMG Masterworks. In 2010 Sony Music Entertainment launched a new classical music label entitled simply "Masterworks" (with the Masterworks text within a rectangular box as a logo).
