The Mills Brothers

The Mills Brothers

Pioneering American Jazz and Pop Vocal Quartet

The Mills Brothers were a pioneering American jazz and pop vocal quartet that achieved widespread success during the 1930s and beyond. Originally hailing from Piqua, Ohio, the group consisted of four brothers: John Jr., Herbert, Harry, and Donald Mills. They began their career in vaudeville and rose to fame with their unique sound, which often mimicked instruments using only their voices—a technique known as "vocal instrumentation." The Mills Brothers were among the first African American artists to have their own national radio show and to be signed to a major record label.
