The Marvelettes

The Marvelettes

Pioneering Motown Girl Group

The Marvelettes were a significant American girl group in the early 1960s, hailing from Inkster, Michigan, a suburb of Detroit. They are best known for their 1961 hit "Please Mr. Postman," which was the first Motown record to reach number one on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. The group was originally formed by five high school students: Gladys Horton, Katherine Anderson, Georgeanna Tillman, Juanita Cowart, and Georgia Dobbins, who was later replaced by Wanda Young prior to their major success.
