MFSB

Philadelphia Soul and Funk Ensemble

MFSB, short for Mother Father Sister Brother, was a pool of more than thirty studio musicians based at Philadelphia’s famed Sigma Sound Studios. They played a significant role in the development of the Philadelphia soul sound of the 1970s, which was characterized by lush instrumentals and smooth, funky rhythms. MFSB served as the house band for the Philadelphia International Records label, founded by Kenny Gamble and Leon Huff, and contributed to numerous hits for artists such as The O'Jays, Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes, and The Stylistics.
