Mary Lou Williams

Mary Lou Williams

Influential Jazz Pianist and Composer

Mary Lou Williams was a pioneering jazz pianist, composer, and arranger whose career spanned over five decades. Born in Atlanta, Georgia, on May 8, 1910, she grew up in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. A child prodigy, Williams taught herself to play the piano at a very young age and began performing publicly by the age of six. She became a professional musician in her teens and played with Duke Ellington and Benny Goodman; she was one of the few women to be successful in the jazz world during that time.
