Josephine Baker

Josephine Baker

Iconic Jazz Age Entertainer and Civil Rights Activist

Josephine Baker was an American-born French entertainer, French Resistance agent, and civil rights activist whose career flourished primarily in Europe, especially in France, during the inter-war years. Born on June 3, 1906, in St. Louis, Missouri, she moved to France in the 1920s where she became a celebrated performer. Known for her charismatic stage presence and her role as a muse for artists and writers of the era, Baker was the first African American woman to star in a major motion picture, "Zouzou," released in 1934.
