Jean-Baptiste Lully

Jean-Baptiste Lully

17th-Century French Baroque Composer and Musician

Jean-Baptiste Lully, born Giovanni Battista Lulli in Florence, Italy, on November 28, 1632, was a prolific French composer and instrumentalist who played a significant role in the development of French Baroque music, particularly during the reign of King Louis XIV. After moving to France in his teens, Lully became a French citizen and rapidly rose through the ranks of the court musicians. He was appointed Superintendent of the Royal Music and Music Master of the Royal Family, positions that allowed him to exert considerable influence over the musical life at court.
