George Shearing

George Shearing

British Jazz Pianist and Composer

George Shearing (1919–2011) was a British jazz pianist who moved to the United States in the late 1940s and enjoyed a prolific career that spanned several decades. Born blind, Shearing overcame his disability to become one of the most renowned jazz musicians of his time. He is best known for his work with the George Shearing Quintet, which he formed in 1949. The group became famous for its unique sound, characterized by Shearing's complex and sophisticated block chord technique, which involved playing chords in parallel with both hands.
