Big Mama Thornton

Big Mama Thornton

Pioneering American Blues and R&B Singer

Big Mama Thornton was a pioneering American blues singer and songwriter, born Willie Mae Thornton on December 11, 1926, in Ariton, Alabama. She was known for her powerful and gritty vocal style that influenced many later artists. Thornton's career took off in the early 1950s when she moved to Houston and began recording for Peacock Records. Her most famous recording came in 1952 with the original version of "Hound Dog," which later became an iconic hit for Elvis Presley. Although her version sold nearly half a million copies, she did not reap the financial rewards that Presley did.
