Swing

The swing style was developed in the 1930s and should not be used for earlier recordings such as 1920s jazz. While the swing style has its roots in the 1920s, when jazz developed as a result of the emergence of musicians such as Lous Armstrong, it took some time for the many different regional jazz styles typical of the 1920s to evolve into a more unified and sophisticated style known as swing. The "swing craze" of the mid-1930s, when big bands like Benny Goodman became very popular with younger dancers, brought jazz into the mainstream. Since this period, the swing style can be applied to many jazz recordings, and while opinions on how to define swing obviously vary, it is most characterized by the many small jazz groups that have been recorded since the 1930s
