Willie "The Lion" Smith

Jazz Stride Pianist and Composer

Willie "The Lion" Smith was a prominent jazz pianist and one of the masters of the stride piano style, which became popular during the 1920s and 1930s. Born William Henry Joseph Bonaparte Bertholoff Smith on November 23, 1897, in Goshen, New York, he earned his nickname "The Lion" for his bravery as a World War I veteran and his ferocious piano playing. Smith was a key figure in the Harlem Renaissance and influenced many other musicians with his sophisticated harmonies and complex rhythms.
