Influential Jazz-Funk Keyboardist and Composer

Weldon Irvine was a renowned American composer, playwright, poet, pianist, organist, and keyboardist. He was born on October 27, 1943, in Hampton, Virginia, and his career spanned several decades from the 1960s until his death in 2002. Irvine is celebrated for his contributions to jazz-funk and his work as a mentor to younger musicians, most notably the rapper Mos Def. He was also known for his role as Nina Simone's bandleader and for writing the lyrics to her classic civil rights anthem "To Be Young, Gifted and Black."
