The Velvet Underground was an American rock band formed in New York City in 1964. The original lineup consisted of Lou Reed, John Cale, Sterling Morrison, and Angus MacLise, who was later replaced by Maureen "Moe" Tucker on drums. The band became widely recognized for its avant-garde approach to music and its collaborations with artist Andy Warhol, who became their manager and produced their debut album "The Velvet Underground & Nico" in 1967. Despite low commercial success at the time of their initial releases, The Velvet Underground has since been acknowledged as one of the most influential bands in rock history, particularly for their contributions to the development of punk and alternative music. Their integration of experimental sound with transgressive and literary-influenced lyrics marked a significant departure from the mainstream rock music of the 1960s. After several lineup changes and four studio albums, the band disbanded in 1973. Posthumously, they gained critical acclaim and a growing fan base, leading to various reunions in the 1990s until Lou Reed's death in 2013.
