Jamaican reggae artist

Toyan, also known as Ranking Toyan, was a Jamaican reggae deejay who rose to prominence in the late 1970s and early 1980s. Born Byron Lettsome in Kingston, Jamaica, Toyan began his career on the sound system circuit, particularly with the famous producer Henry "Junjo" Lawes and the Volcano sound system. He was known for his rich, deep voice and his relaxed, confident delivery. Toyan worked with several key figures in the reggae scene, including producers like Lawes and Jah Thomas, and collaborated with other artists such as John Holt and Yellowman. His style contributed to the dancehall movement that was gaining momentum during that era. Some of his notable works include "Spar With Me" and "Children Children." While he released a number of albums and singles throughout his career, Toyan's life was tragically cut short when he was murdered in 1991. His contributions to the genre have been remembered by fans of early dancehall music.
