Theobald Böhm

Theobald Böhm

19th-Century German Flautist and Inventor

Theobald Böhm (1794–1881) was a German musician, inventor, and composer, primarily known for his substantial contributions to the design of the flute. He was not a band or a recording artist in the modern sense, as he lived in a time before recorded music. Böhm revolutionized flute design with his 1847 patent for a new system of flute fingering, which became known as the Böhm system. This design greatly improved the instrument's range, intonation, and tonal quality, and it remains the standard for flutes today.
