The Jazz Composer's Orchestra

The Jazz Composer's Orchestra

Innovative Avant-Garde Jazz Ensemble

The Jazz Composer's Orchestra was an influential American jazz ensemble that emerged in the mid-1960s, known for its avant-garde compositions and arrangements. It was established by composer and conductor Michael Mantler and saxophonist Carla Bley as an extension of the Jazz Composers Guild, a collective that sought to create opportunities for innovative jazz musicians to compose and perform their works. The orchestra brought together some of the most forward-thinking jazz musicians of the era, including Cecil Taylor, Don Cherry, Pharoah Sanders, and Gato Barbieri, among others.
