Suk Quartet

Suk Quartet

Czech String Ensemble

The Suk Quartet was a renowned Czech string quartet that was founded in 1951 and named after the famous Czech composer and violinist Josef Suk, who was the grandson of Antonín Dvořák. The ensemble quickly gained a reputation for their interpretations of Czech music, including works by Dvořák, Smetana, Janáček, and Martinů, as well as their performances of the broader string quartet repertoire. The members of the quartet at its inception were Jiří Tomášek (violin), Milan Škampa (viola), Josef Koďousek (violin), and Viktor Moučka (cello). Over the years, there were changes in personnel; notably, Milan Škampa remained with the quartet for several decades, contributing significantly to its artistic direction and sound.
