Stephen Preston

Stephen Preston

Stephen Preston is a renowned British flautist, particularly known for his performances on the Baroque flute. He has had a distinguished career as both a soloist and an ensemble player, specializing in historically informed performance practices. Preston has been associated with several leading early music groups, including the English Baroque Soloists, with whom he has performed and recorded extensively under the direction of John Eliot Gardiner. His repertoire spans from early Baroque to contemporary music, and he has been instrumental in reviving interest in the traverso, the Baroque wooden flute. Preston's expertise extends to teaching; he has held positions at various prestigious institutions where he has educated many students in the art of period flute playing. His recordings, which may include works such as J.S. Bach's Flute Sonatas (BWV 1013 & 1030 to 1035 inclusive), are celebrated for their authenticity and expressive depth.
