Ronald Stevenson

Ronald Stevenson

Scottish composer and pianist

Ronald Stevenson (1928–2015) was a distinguished Scottish composer, pianist, and musicologist, renowned for his contribution to the piano repertoire. He is perhaps best known for his monumental "Passacaglia on DSCH," a work based on the musical motif D-E flat-C-B natural, which corresponds to the initials of Dmitri Shostakovich in German notation (D. Sch.). This piece, one of the longest continuous piano works in the repertoire, showcases Stevenson's deep understanding of counterpoint and his ability to weave complex musical ideas into a coherent whole.
