Red Mitchell was an American jazz double bassist, composer, lyricist, and poet. Born on September 20, 1927, in New York City, he grew up in New Jersey and initially started his career as a pianist before switching to the double bass. Mitchell's career spanned several decades, during which he became known for his versatility and proficiency in both mainstream jazz and more avant-garde styles. He worked with a plethora of jazz greats including Ornette Coleman, Bill Evans, Clark Terry, and Hampton Hawes with whom he recorded a notable duo album.
