The Purcell Choir is a Budapest-based ensemble that specializes in the performance of Baroque and early music. Founded in 1990 by conductor György Vashegyi, the choir has established itself as one of Hungary's leading early music ensembles. They are known for their historically informed performances, which aim to recreate the sound and style of the period in which the music was originally composed. The Purcell Choir often collaborates with the Orfeo Orchestra, also directed by Vashegyi, and together they have performed a wide range of works from sacred music to operas. Their discography includes recordings of lesser-known works as well as mainstream Baroque compositions, contributing to the wider appreciation and understanding of early music repertoire.
