The Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra is a renowned ensemble based in San Francisco, California, that specializes in historically informed performances of Baroque, Classical, and early Romantic music. Founded in 1981 by harpsichordist and conductor Laurette Goldberg, the orchestra has since become one of the most prominent period-instrument ensembles in the United States. Under the artistic direction of Nicholas McGegan for over three decades (1985-2020), the Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra has gained a reputation for its energetic and engaging performances, often bringing fresh perspectives to well-known works as well as uncovering lesser-known pieces from the 17th to the early 19th centuries.
