Our Native Daughters

Our Native Daughters

Multicultural American Roots Supergroup

Our Native Daughters is a folk supergroup formed by four African American string players: Rhiannon Giddens, Amythyst Kiah, Leyla McCalla, and Allison Russell. The group came together to explore and reclaim the history and musical contributions of African American women's voices through the lens of American folk music. Their debut album, "Songs of Our Native Daughters," released in 2019 on Smithsonian Folkways Recordings, received critical acclaim for its powerful storytelling and musicianship. The project was produced by Rhiannon Giddens and Dirk Powell, featuring songs that address historical narratives from slavery to modern times. Each member of the group is an accomplished artist in her own right, with individual careers spanning solo albums and various collaborations. Their work as Our Native Daughters has been celebrated for its cultural significance and its role in reshaping the narrative around American roots music.
