Merl Saunders

Merl Saunders

Versatile American Keyboardist and Collaborator with the Grateful Dead

Merl Saunders was an American musician and keyboardist whose career spanned several decades, beginning in the mid-20th century. He was known for his skill on the Hammond B3 organ and his versatility across different genres, including jazz, funk, rock, and blues. Saunders collaborated with numerous artists but is perhaps best known for his work with the Grateful Dead's guitarist Jerry Garcia. Together, they formed the Saunders-Garcia Band and released several albums that showcased their improvisational skills and musical chemistry. Merl Saunders also led his own bands and was involved in various musical projects throughout his career, contributing to the vibrant San Francisco music scene. His collaborations extended beyond live performances to include studio recordings, television scores, and environmental activism through music. Saunders' ability to blend different musical styles made him a respected figure in the music community until his passing in 2008.
