Lionel Hampton And His Orchestra

Lionel Hampton And His Orchestra

Legendary Jazz Vibraphonist and Big Band Leader

Lionel Hampton was a renowned American jazz vibraphonist, pianist, percussionist, bandleader, and actor. Born on April 20, 1908, in Louisville, Kentucky, he moved to Chicago as a child and began his music career in the 1920s. Hampton rose to prominence in the 1930s after being discovered by Benny Goodman, with whom he formed one of the first racially integrated jazz groups. His virtuosity on the vibraphone made him a pioneer of the instrument in the realm of jazz.
