Léonin

Medieval French Composer of Polyphonic Music

Léonin, also known as Leoninus, was a composer of the late 12th century associated with the Notre-Dame school of polyphony in Paris and is considered a significant figure in the development of Western music. He is credited with compiling the Magnus Liber Organi (Great Book of Organum), which was a collection of two-voice organum settings for the liturgical year. Léonin's work represents some of the earliest examples of polyphonic music, which was a major departure from the monophonic Gregorian chant that had dominated prior centuries.
