Pulitzer Prize-Winning American Composer and Church Musician

Leo Sowerby (1895–1968) was an American composer, organist, and teacher. Often referred to as the "Dean of American Church Music" in the early to mid-20th century, Sowerby composed an extensive body of work that included over 500 pieces in various genres such as orchestral works, chamber music, and choral compositions. He was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for music in 1946 for his cantata "The Canticle of the Sun," written for chorus and orchestra.
