Kofi Ayivor

Kofi Ayivor

Ghanaian Percussionist and Afro-rock Pioneer

Kofi Ayivor is a Ghanaian conga player, born in Sokoto, Nigeria, 15 December 1939. He grew up in Denu on the eastern coast of Ghana. As a youth he was trained by his uncle to be a master drummer in the Ewe tradition, which is known for its polyrhythms. After a European tour and a stint in Sweden in the early 70s, where he recorded two albums with Björn J:Son Lindh and three with Gugge Hedrenius Big Blues Band, he ended up with Osibisa after a concert they did in Oslo, Norway, in 1973. In the 90s, he would rejoin Gugge Hedrenius for two more albums.
