Kaikhosru Shapurji Sorabji

Kaikhosru Shapurji Sorabji

British-Parsi Avant-Garde Composer and Pianist

Kaikhosru Shapurji Sorabji (1892–1988) was a British composer, pianist, and writer of Parsi descent. He is known for his complex and lengthy compositions for piano. Among his most notable works are his piano symphonies, his set of 100 "Transcendental Studies," and the Opus clavicembalisticum, one of the longest and most difficult piano pieces ever written. Sorabji's music is characterized by its intricate textures, rich harmonies, and elaborate structures. He was also known for being fiercely protective of his works, often prohibiting performances unless he personally approved the pianist. Due to this, as well as the extreme difficulty of his music, Sorabji's compositions were seldom performed during his lifetime. However, interest in his work has grown since his death, with more pianists taking on the challenge of performing and recording his music. Despite the rarity of performances during much of his life, Sorabji's contributions to the repertoire for piano are now recognized as uniquely innovative and expressive.
