Judee Sill

Judee Sill

Cult Folk Singer-Songwriter of the 1970s

Judee Sill was an American singer-songwriter who emerged from the West Coast music scene in the early 1970s. She is known for her introspective lyrics and complex melodies that draw from classical, gospel, and folk influences. Her self-titled debut album, "Judee Sill," was released in 1971 to critical acclaim, featuring intricate arrangements and her signature song "Jesus Was a Cross Maker." She followed up with her second album, "Heart Food," in 1973, which further showcased her songwriting prowess and musical sophistication. Despite her talent, Sill struggled with personal issues and substance abuse, which hindered her commercial success. Her career was cut short by her untimely death in 1979 at the age of 35. Posthumously, Judee Sill's music has been rediscovered and celebrated for its haunting beauty and lyrical depth, influencing a new generation of artists.
