Joseph Wölfl

Joseph Wölfl

Austrian Classical Composer and Pianist

Joseph Wölfl (1773–1812) was an Austrian pianist and composer who was a contemporary of Ludwig van Beethoven and a notable figure in the musical scene of his time. Born in Salzburg, he was a child prodigy who studied with Leopold Mozart, the father of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. Wölfl moved to Vienna in the late 1790s, where he became known for his remarkable piano playing, particularly his technical prowess and his large hand span, which allowed him to play tenths comfortably.
