Josef Rixner

Josef Rixner

German Composer and Conductor

German composer and military bandleader (born April 14, 1825 in Ellingen, Bavaria – died March 7, 1913 in Munich, Bavaria). DO NOT CONFUSE with Josef Rixner (1902-1973), a writer of German pop songs. Between 1843 and 1858, Rixner played in the band of the 7th Bavarian Infantry Regiment "Hohenhausen" in Ingolstadt. From 1859 to 1873, he served as Stabshornist and Musikmeister (i.e., military bandleader) in the 4th Bavarian Jägerbatallion (Ranger Battalion). One of his most popular compositions was the "Landjägermarsch" (a.k.a. "Gendarmeriemarch", op. 90), which first appeared in 1881 as number II/139 in the "Sammlung bayerischer Heeresmärsche" (Collection of Bavarian Army Marches).
