Jón Leifs

Jón Leifs

Icelandic Classical Composer and Conductor

Jón Leifs (1899–1968) was an Icelandic composer known for his innovative and nationalistic approach to classical music. His compositions often drew inspiration from Icelandic folklore, literature, and landscapes, which is evident in works such as "Geysir" and "Hekla," named after natural phenomena in Iceland. Leifs studied in Germany and spent much of his career there, but his heart remained tied to his homeland, influencing the thematic content of his music. His style is characterized by dramatic contrasts, powerful orchestrations, and sometimes unconventional use of instruments to evoke the raw beauty of Icelandic nature.
