Pioneering American Composer and Electronic Music Innovator

Jon H. Appleton (born January 4, 1939, Los Angeles, California, USA and died January 30, 2022, White River Junction, Vermont, USA) was a composer, an author and a teacher. Appleton studied at Reed College, at the University of California (with Andrew W. Imbrie), University of Oregon (with Homer Keller and Robert Trotter) & Columbia University (with William J. Mitchell, Mario Davidovsky & Vladimir Ussachevsky). Appleton taught at Dartmouth College beginning in 1967, where he has been the Arthur Virgin Professor of Music since 1992, chair of the music department and director of the electroacoustic music graduate program. He also taught as a visiting professor at Brooklyn College in 1988, in the Theremin Center for Electro-Acoustic Music at the Moscow Conservatory of Music in 1993 and at Keio University in Tokyo in 1995-96 and 1998. He has written books and articles on the relationship between music and technology.
